Level III Trauma Center
As verified by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma, a Level III Trauma Center has demonstrated an ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation and stabilization of injured patients.
Key elements of a Level III Trauma Center include 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians and the prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists. The Level III program is dedicated to continued improvement in trauma care through a comprehensive quality assessment program. The Level III Trauma Center has developed transfer agreements for patients requiring more comprehensive care at a Level I or Level II Trauma Center.
Services Provided
In addition to treating the full range of adult conditions, services are available for the evaluation and treatment of emergencies involving infants and children.
The department is equipped to handle community emergencies with specialized equipment available to be used in the event of a bioterroism event. We have a close working relationship with State and local emergency preparedness agencies to ensure that we are prepared for mass casualty events.
In addition to our fully staffed Emergency Department, specialized care teams and services are available including cardiac catheterization and state-of-the-art imaging services.
We work with Flight For Life and Med Flight when emergency air transportation is required to link ill and injured people to other specialized critical care resources.
Board Certification
In 1979, emergency medicine was recognized as the nation's 23rd specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialists. That same year, the American Board of Emergency Medicine, the independent certifying body for the specialty, was also set in place.
A board certified physician has completed an approved educational training program and an evaluation process including an examination designed to assess the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to provide quality patient care in that specialty.
