ProHealth Care Gastrointestinal (GI) Services

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

Every year during November, ProHealth Care helps spread the word about pancreatic cancer to help increase knowledge about the disease. Organizations from around the world come together to urge people to get involved in the global movement to end pancreatic cancer. This year, we're asking that everyone wear their purple to support awareness for pancreatice cancer, now the fourth leading cause of cancer in the United States.

The American Cancer Society's most recent estimates for pancreatic cancer for 2011:

  • About 44,030 new cases of pancreatic cancerGI Center
  • About 37,660 deaths from pancreatic cancer

Most recently, Steve Jobs died from a neuroendocrine tumor of his pancreas. He provided hope for all those afflicted with pancreatic cancer. For seven years he beat the odds and brought awareness to this type of cancer. Actor Patrick Swayze also died of pancreatic cancer in 2009.

If you or someone you know is suffering from pancreatic cancer, or if you would like more information, please follow the links to the American Cancer Society www.cancer.org or to the Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Network www.pancan.org/milwaukee for patient information and support services.

FEATURED TOPIC:   PANCREATIC CANCER

Cancer of the pancreas is sometimes called the “silent” disease because symptoms are not present in the early stages. It is difficult to find pancreatic cancer early. This is partly due to the location of the pancreas. It lies deep in the abdomen, behind your liver and across your upper abdomen. There are no routine screening tests for this cancer. Symptoms usually occur in advanced cases. Always see your physician if you have any medical concerns.
